Perry is a Chicago native born to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first appearance was on television as Jackie Harris, a character which was played by her mother in Roseanne, an ABC comedy Roseanne. Perry was forbidden to start acting with her parents till she reached adulthood, as they feared the anxiety it could cause. Perry admitted that she wasn't at ease in the stage during high school. She began doing it to meet new people during her time at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry went on to New York, where she was offered small roles in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Homesickness then brought Perry her back home California, where theater jobs were readily available. In 2013, she was a part of The Other Place on Broadway alongside her mother. The father of her Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer prize-winning film Anna Christie with her in 2015. Perry was featured nine times on the ABC drama The Family, in 2016. Her father portrayed her in The ABC show Scandal. That same year she appeared as a younger version of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory), portraying her mother in a younger version. The character was chosen by auditions, even the fact that she had a deep association with it.
